XX Commonwealth Games: Unified by sport in Scotland

Scotland celebrated their culture during the ceremony

The Commonwealth Games have started and on top of being a triumph of sporting and skill display, the Glasgow Games is striving to put children first. UNICEF is the Official Charity Partner of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, and athletes, spectators, sports fans and viewers took a journey across the Commonwealth not only to see the talent of the performers at the opening ceremony but also to realise UNICEF's mission for children.

The ceremony dedicated part of the event to the children in need around the world, and between solemnity and enthusiasm the crowd celebrated sport and culture in Scotland.

As highlights of the ceremony is worth mentioning the Rod Stuart’s performance, the intervention of Billy Connolly,  actor James McAvoy’s charity plead, and the NASA team greeting, which stole more than one smile with the microphone skills form outer space.

There was also time to pay the respects to the people who died in the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, as many nations grieved for their loses.

The transmission concluded with the athletes and coaches taking the oaths, which brought out the values of Humanity, Equality and Destiny. It concluded with the intervention of Queen Elizabeth, who set the moment to lit up the torch and give way to the torch parade.
