Gabriel Medina Cruises to the top

With the recently appointed number 1 rank from the WCT (World Championship Tour), Gabriel Medina can now boast to be at the top of the professional surfing ladder, as well as the first Brazilian WCT surfer to win the number 1 title.

His achievement can be mainly attributed to his ‘Perfect 10’, scored at the Final Billabong Pipe Masters championship held at the Banzai Pipeline in Oahu/Hawaii. Racking up a total of 62,800 points at the WTC, Medina achieved a lead over the second place held by the Australian Mick Fanning of over 7,000 points.

Born in the modest town of Maresias in the north-east of Brazil, his spotlight on the international scene has also brought to light this newly found breeding ground for upcoming surfers.

Medina explains during his interview with ASP (The Association of Surfing Professionals) that the beaches of Maresias have the perfect structure to produce the best waves for the sport, having given him perfect waves to surf every day for almost 10 years.

Hopefully, Medina’s good luck will continue into the next world championship season.
