Almost 20 years ago, a Brazilian man introduced a totally new and interesting practice in Brisbane, engaging people from different countries to discover the Capoeira. The Afro-Brazilian art that mixes arts, musicality, rhythm, acrobatics, and culture. Since then, a lot of people, including the Latin Americans, specially Brazilians and Colombians, are enjoying this sport and lifestyle here in Australia

“I came from Colombia to Australia five years ago and the first thing that I did was looking for a capoeira school, because I have practised for more than 14 years in my homeland. When I found this school, I fell in love and joined to the group. For me, Capoeira is mystic and spiritual, because of the whole energy around the music and the sense of community. The friends here are like a family”, explained Cristian Arevalo, who became a Capoeira teacher at Xango school.

Claudio Caracol, the current owner of the school, told that nowadays there around 60 adults and 20 children of 4 years up 10 in the group. Besides Australia, they are from different places like Chile, Colombia, Brazil, France, Mozambique, England, Indonesia, and others. “We are one of the biggest schools in Australia and the community is growing all the time because it is not only a sport, it is a lifestyle, like a big community”, he said.

“For people who arrive to Brisbane, the school is a good way to be heath and make new friends. We already had some happy cases of dating and marriages", completed him.

Besides exercising the body a lot, players learn how to sing the songs and expressions in Portuguese, the idiom of the Capoeira, discovering a new culture.

There are at least five big groups of Capoeira in Brisbane. If you are interested in visting and joining to this big community, chose one and go ahead.  In general, the schools offer the first class free.

Other option is to attend the event of July 31th at Miami Park, GoldCoast. There you can feel the Capoeira magic and, who knows, to make some new special friends.
