Where is the Latino Presence at G20?

As Brisbane hosts the G20, our city is seeing a multitude of world leaders passing us in cars with blackened windows. But are the leaders who are part of the G20 clique really representative of the world economy?

Members of the G20 can be defined as a cocktail of the world’s largest advanced and emerging economies, representing two-thirds of the world’s population. The countries in the G20 clique are Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union. But only three Latino countries are represented at the G20: Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico.

Various countries in South America are seeing large amounts of economic growth and are contributing greatly to the production of domestic product and global trade. So why aren’t more South American countries included in the G20?

Colombia has had a 0.3% growth rate in their economy, Bolivia 1.6% growth, and Paraguay a massive 14.8% rate of economic growth. Arguably, economically Paraguay is doing a lot better than most countries included in the G20. This evidence shows that South American countries are becoming more and more economically stable and producing large amounts of domestic product that can be exported that contribute to their economy. Latino countries are also contributing largely to domestic trade with coffee, wine, Acai and many other products.
