What does it mean to be an Australian?

I posed the question - What does it mean to be an Australian? To the online public, and these were the responses.

Some, summed up the values we try and hold true to.

“[Being an Australian is about] mate-ship, wanting everyone to have a fair go, but also teasing everyone you get to know”
-Jemimah

“[Being Australian is] to care about what’s happening to Australia and to want the betterment of the country. -Harry

Another response focused on an Australian issue, effecting people and county.

“[Being Australian is] a constant reminder of the atrocities on our indigenous people” -James

And another summed up the culture simply with a-

“Drink beer.” -Riley

So what do Australian’s value?

Since 1981, the World Values Survey has tracked changes in the values and beliefs of citizens in 97 countries, including Australia.

And here are the results.

We value democracy and have respect for authority, despite our sometimes cheeky ways.

“Our thoughts on immigration remain mixed. We believe that migrants make Australia more diverse and vibrant, but also that immigration increases social conflict.

And around half of all Australians believe in God, and an afterlife,” says the Australian values study.
