To the delight of excited and inebriated crowds the Story Bridge cockroach races

To the delight of excited and inebriated crowds the Story Bridge cockroach races were run today in celebration of Australia Day and went off without a hitch.

Approximately 30 races were run throughout the day, though punters and judges alike eventually lost count.

The event also featured a Miss Cocky modelling competition, and a loud rendition of Waltzing Matilda. 

The tradition began in 1982 when, legend says, two frequent pub veterans began debating the speed of cockroaches from different states.

The next day, the two had begun taking bets and racing roaches, and the event grew in popularity over the years. 

Though many have attributed the cockroach to Queensland living, the insects were actually introduced most likely from Africa and thrive in America.

Many animal rights organisations have called in to question the races, commenting that the event encourages an attitude of ownership towards sentient beings and teaches the community that animals are a tool for entertainment, diminishing their worth as living creatures. 

Despite this controversy, the event is set to continue in the coming years.
