That special Chukale sound: Interview with Stefania Serna

Stefania Serna is the beautiful face that fronts Chukale, the dynamic Salsa ensemble of Brissie. But her voice tells a much more complex story.  She has brought the diversity and strength of Colombian salsa to Chukale’s established Cuban sound. Lucy Oliver caught up with Stefania and chatted about her musical journey and her role in Chukale’s evolving history. 

“Chukale was formed nine years ago by percussionist and lead vocalist Gustavo Cereijo.  It has a strong and prominent history in Brisbane.  And since I joined the band last year we have been making plans for touring New Zealand, and recording a new cd.”

When asked about her role in Chukale Stefania comments on how she is proud to bring Colombian salsa style to the fore in their performances.

 “At the moment Brisbane is only aware of Cuban salsa, but now with the varied approach of Chukale people can access a new and different sound.”

But what is that different sound?  Stefania elaborates: 

“Cuban salsa is more traditional. This kind of salsa has a strong influence of "the clave", however, Colombian music has more "freedom" about joining other sounds and experience diverse fusions. Anyway, they are such an amazing complement between each other.”

Stefania is a very busy woman. She moved to Brisbane in 2012, and joined Chukale in 2013.  “I work full time as a musician singing with the band, and also supporting Latino establishments with Mariachi and reggaeton music.”  And just to top things off she is also an engineer who just finished her masters.

It is Stefania’s passion for music that sets her apart.“I feel happiest when I connect with people through my music and see the joy they get from live performances.”

Chukale already have a cd that was released in 2011,  Expedition, and they currently have a residence at Cloudland every thursday night. Stefania will be there, singing her heart out and bringing a unique Colombian twist to the performance. Go and see (and hear) for yourself!
