Sydney Siege: What happens now?

After the events of the hostage incident at Martin Place in Sydney, a sequence of events changing and affecting Australia’s society is set in motion.

This week Australia felt the ache of a hostage tragedy, but a tragedy that is sadly not uncommon in many countries around the world. With two of the hostages as well as the gunman dead, many people are asking how this could have happened in Australia and what happens now? Do we increase our national security or was this simply just a one off incident?

Not long ago the Gold Coast was in uproar against plans for a new mosque to be built. Protests against the mosque quickly turned into racism against Muslims and from many Facebook posts that have been trending since the Sydney siege many are pointing the finger at the entire Muslim community. Regardless of the fact that the Sydney siege was the act of one single criminal with extreme personal beliefs many are happy to use it as an excuse to reiterate their point that Muslims do not belong in Australia.

It seems also that the Australian Government is using the Sydney siege as an excuse to accomplish its own means. Tony Abbott has plans to give police officers more power and has basically said ‘well this is why we have data retention.’
