Student Life In 2015: What can we expect?

What can students studying in Australia expect from higher tertiary education in 2015? Is it good? Or can we expect an academic dystopian future?

The academic year for higher tertiary education hasn’t even started, yet there is an ominous feel in the air that life for students is only going to become more difficult. With cutbacks in university education thanks to the liberal government and the collapsing of university departments and faculties its no wonder that students are feeling more and more on edge.

As a student myself I know my generation has it a lot easier than previous generations who would only be able to attend university if they came from ridiculously wealthy families. But it seems we’re inching closer and closer back towards that reality except now the universities will have a lower quality. From personal experience at the University of Queensland, one of my majors barely exists anymore; the major has been trimmed and trimmed to the point where there is no room for choosing subjects, you just have to take what is left. The same ‘trimming’ has occurred with entire departments and faculties; the School of Communication has now merged with Journalism.

With the seemingly constant collapsing of faculties into other faculties and the subject cutbacks it seems we are destined for an academic dystopian 2015.
