South American countries move toward greater aviation integration

Brazil, along with Paraguay, Argentina, and Chile, signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the South American Air Liberalization Agreement (ALAS) in Asunción, Paraguay, on Tuesday (Jul. 14). The document sets out the framework for the creation of the Single South American Sky.

Conceived by the countries of the region, the initiative aims to create a South American air transport market that is more open to the provision of air services while taking into account each country’s legal and regulatory frameworks.

“Among the objectives are expanding flight services, gradually reducing regulatory barriers, and modernizing rules governing access to air transport markets,” Brazil’​s Ministry of Ports and Airports said in a statement.

The goal is to better connect cities across South America, following the example of Africa, the European Union, and Oceania.

A working group will be established to develop proposals for the gradual implementation of the Single South American Sky within 12 months. The group will comprise aviation authorities from the participating countries.

Uruguay has indicated that it plans to sign the memorandum at a later date.
