Several events from 4th to 12th June celebrate Queensland`s birthday

In Brisbane, places will be decorated in maroon color and sporting and musical events will be held

To celebrate Queensland’s birthday on 6 June, the annual celebration ‘Queensland Week’ will promote several events from 4th to 12th June. Some workplaces are going to be decorated in maroon to symbolize pride in their state and events with music, sports and open days will be held to all community.

The week-long celebration centres on the ‘birth’ of Queensland as a separate colony in its own right and focus on state’s culture, heritage, people and industry. Since 1981, Queensland’s birthday has been officially promoted by the Queensland Government and has expanded to include a series of events and celebrations.

In Brisbane, the Treasury Casino & Hotel will be lit maroon to celebrate the Queensland Week from 4th to 12th June. In the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, the 2016 Queensland Wheelchair Basketball Championships will be held from 4th to 6th June, open to teams throughout Australia and overseas from both A and B grade divisions. The Classics are open to all wheelchair basketball players from beginner through to elite level.

The Government House is going to host an Open Day in 4th June, from 12pm to 4pm. Visitors will be given the opportunity to discover the rich history of Queensland’s premier heritage estate at the Government House, tour parts on the Governor’s official residence and enjoy a picnic in the picturesque heritage-listed gardens. Entry is free via Fernberg Rd and Baroona Rd.

On Saturday 4th, a free music concert is also going to be promoted in South Bank House. The ‘Celebrate QLD Free Music Concert’ will happen from 3pm to 7pm, in the Courier-Mail Piazza, Glenelg St & Little Stanley St. Performances include Adam Brand, Sheppard, Cheap Fakes and Phoncurves.

The Port of Brisbane will also have a Tour Day on 7th and 8th June, from 12:30pm to 1:30pm. It will be offered a site-tour for the general public for a free one hour tour, for a limited number and register must be done by calling 07 3258 4888 and mention ‘PBPL’ to receive a seat on the tour.

History of Queensland Day

Queensland Day celebrates the day when Queen Victoria signed documents granting Queensland the right to have its own representative government and separating from New South Wales. The state was a self-governing colony from 1859 to 1901 and became one of Australia’s six founding states on January 1st, 1901. The day has officially been celebrated since 1981. Queensland Day is not a public holiday in the state.
