- Safety improvements have been completed on the Cunningham Highway between Tregony and Maryvale.
- The project included road widening, pavement strengthening, guardrails and other targeted safety improvements along a key regional corridor.
- More than 3.2 kilometres of guardrail was installed and nearly 14,000 tonnes of asphalt was laid as part of the upgrade.
- The Albanese and Crisafulli Governments are getting Queenslanders home safer and sooner, with more reliable journeys along one of southern Queensland’s most important freight and community routes.
Motorists, freight operators and regional communities are now benefiting from safer and more reliable journeys on the Cunningham Highway, with major safety upgrades between Tregony and Maryvale now complete.
The Albanese Government is investing $31.8 million towards the $39.8 million Cunningham Highway Safety Package, jointly funded with the Crisafulli Government, to deliver road widening, pavement strengthening, new guardrails and other targeted safety improvements designed to reduce serious crashes and improve driving conditions.
The completion marks a major milestone for one of southern Queensland’s most important freight and community routes, restoring a stronger and safer connection between South East Queensland and regional communities across the Darling Downs and beyond.
The completion of the project also allows the reopening of the Fisher Park Rest Areas, restoring an important stop for motorists travelling through the area.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, the Honourable Catherine King welcomed the delivery of these safety improvements.
“The Albanese and Crisafulli Governments are committed to improving road safety along the transport corridors regional communities rely on, which is why we have worked together to deliver these upgrades,” said Minister King.
“The completed safety works will provide lasting benefits for drivers travelling between Tregony and Maryvale and help reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes.”
Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the project was another example of the Crisafulli Government getting on with the job of fixing regional roads.
"This is a project that is now complete and delivering real benefits for Queenslanders," Minister Mickelberg said.
"The Cunningham Highway is a critical freight and community link and these upgrades mean safer journeys, a stronger road surface and more reliable travel for the people who use it every day.
"From local residents and regional businesses to truck drivers moving freight across the state, this upgrade will make a real difference to how people travel through the region.
"This is exactly the kind of practical road infrastructure that helps keep Queensland industries moving and gets Queenslanders home safer and sooner."
Member for Southern Downs James Lister said the completed works were welcome news for local communities and road users.
"This project is now complete and local communities will see the benefits every time they travel this section of the highway," Mr Lister said.
"The Cunningham Highway is one of the most important transport corridors in the Southern Downs and these upgrades will help deliver safer and more reliable journeys for residents, businesses and visitors.
“Local Southern Downs motorists will notice that these roadworks have been completed to a very high standard, and will not turn into a stretch of potholes when it rains.
"It's fantastic to see another important regional road project delivered and improving safety on a corridor that supports our communities, agriculture and freight industries."
