Nearly 1000 dogs impounded and 234 euthanized at Darwin in the last year

Now with the end of the financial year the Darwin council has released statistics revealing that 23,4 per cent of the local dogs were put down in that period of time. So the rate indicates that one four-legged friend was gone each 36 hours roughly.

“Of the nearly 1000 dogs impounded in the last financial year, a total of 234 dogs were euthanized, 90 per cent of which were unregistered,” Darwin council general manager Diana Leeder said about that really sad reporter. “Pet owners are reminded to make sure their pets are registered so council can reunite them with their owners.”

Under the council’s new Value Improvement Program (VIP) it has been cracking down on processing pups through the pound. As the NT News reported, the council has cut the days a dog is held from 10 days to 3.9 days.

Leeder had previously stated that this was due to “operational processes: ”The VIP has been aimed at increasing the council’s ­efficiency in a number of areas such as animal management.

The program, when applied to the pound, will save the council $22 a day or between $30 to $40 thousand dollars annually. That's the reason why animal lovers were upset with the news of the dog cull. “Darwin is a transient town, if you are on holidays there is not enough time to pick up ­animals in 3.9 days,” Darwin Animal Rescue manager ­Rachelle Dunk claim.

Any case, the number seems to be really high and the sadness left in the community is enormous.
