Metro offers new job opportunities in Brisbane

In the beginning of the year Lord Mayor Graham Quick announced the Brisbane Metro plan, as part of his election commitments. The Brisbane Metro would see sections of the south – east and inner northern busways altered and underground subway system that would link Woolloongabba to Herston.

It is not going to be only a solution to ease Brisbane’s inner city bus network congestion, but it will also create more than 7,000 jobs opportunities.

"I can announce today that, based on preliminary estimates, we expect that this project will create more than 7700 direct and indirect jobs for the city of Brisbane," he told Deputy Mayor Adrian Schrinner Brisbane City Council’s public transport chairman. “The job figure would not only include construction workers, but also off-site employment”.

Cr Schrinner said that the figure was reachedusing methodology formulated by Queensland Treasury. "Based on Queensland Treasury's index of employment multipliers, they believe that every million dollars of construction investment and expenditure creates 6.7 FTEs, or full-time equivalent jobs," he said.

This project will allow the city’s CBD to continue growing and creating jobs, not only in the city but elsewhere. "Brisbane doesn't want to miss out on those jobs."

The council has estimated the Brisbane Metro's price tag to be $1.54 billion, of which $1.15 billion would be construction expenditure. Construction is also scheduled to start later this year on a river-based fountain east of Victoria Bridge.

The rapid transit project is billed as solving the bus bottleneck at the Cultural Centre station.
