Melbourne cup was celebrated with high heels, fancy hats, and bucket loads of champagne. But the race that stops the nation also claimed two lives, thoroughbred horses Admire Rakti and Araldo.

Thoroughbred horses Admire Rakti and Araldo died because of the Melbourne cup. Admire Ratki is believed to have suffered a severe heart attack or internal bleeding as a result of the race while Araldo became so frightened he bolted through a gate, shattering the bone in his leg and had to euthanized.

Two innocent animals died on Tuesday to fuel Australia’s need for drunken betting and watching animals race. Organisations such as RSPCA and Animals Australia have consistently slammed horse racing as cruel and unnecessary. In horse races throughout the year Australia regularly witnesses bloodshed inflicted on innocent animals and yet Australia turns a blind eye, predicting next years horse racing fashions and arranging how to make the celebrations even bigger and better.

What will it take for this kind of cruelty to stop? If many gave it a second thought they would think that Melbourne cup is a cruel race that has sickening consequences. Australians poured champagne as Admire Rakti was declared dead and collected their bets will Araldo literally frightened himself to death.

Next year, or at any other animal racing event, think about the enjoyment you are getting from watching animals in pain and perhaps reconsider your support.
