Finding a job (and keeping it) Gringo’s ten hot tips

There’s a huge range of jobs out  there for you if you’re new to Brisbane, or looking for a change, but the question is, where do you start looking, and how can you get a job quickly that will bring the money in?

Here Gringo presents you with ten top tips to land a good job and get some hard earned cash:

1. Put yourself out there. Send out your resume 20 times. No, make that 30 times.  Once you’ve emailed it, call people, then call again.
4. Regarding your resume, keep it short and to the point, ideally 1 page, and no more than two. Try the KISS approach (Keep it simple, stupid)

1. And rehash that resume. If English is your second language get a friend, colleague or teacher to check it for you. Spelling errors and grammar slip ups are a no-no.

1. Trawl the net, then check it again – don’t just look at gumtree, also job search engines like Seek, Backpacker Job Board or My Career .

1. Be selective, but not too selective. It’s important to apply for jobs within your skill set, but sometimes a casual, menial job that’s temporary may not be your dream, but it may bring in the money.  Essentially, aim lower, as well as higher.

1. Once you get an interview, and then you’re given the job, BE CAREFUL. Cash in hand is convenient, but the chance for exploitation is much greater. If your boss decides to fire you without paying, then there’s no way you can reclaim the money through your authority.

2. Fair work ombudsman - we have this governing body in our country, and they defend your rights. Click on this link:  http://www.fairwork.gov.au/  You should know your rights before you look for a job. If you don’t, and you want to risk it, that’s okay too, but be prepared for change, and challenges.

3. Don’t give up.  Try, try and try again. Just remember, if you don’t get a job straight away, the next one could be the right one for you.
