El Torito Mexican Restaurant: Resounding Gusto in West End

Mexican food is huge in Brisbane. Walk 500 metres in the CBD and you’re likely to find a burrito bar.  As diners we are spoilt with the richness, quality and variety of burritos, nachos, quesadillas, fajitas, lashings of good cheese and the kick of a strong drink.

But it’s not all the same – and the quality varies. How soft is your tortilla? How smooth is your guacamole, and how authentic are your surroundings?  El Torito answers all these questions with resounding gusto. It is one of the original and unsung meccas of good Mexican food in Brisbane. It’s nested in the heart of West End, on Boundary street. And it’s been going strong for 14 years.The interior is refreshingly gaudy – a riot of colour but with a nice sense of simplicity.

The menu boasts every conceivable concoction you can imagine, at very reasonable prices.

The greatest hits include “Mole Poblano” – chicken served with a rich, nut and vegetable sauce tinged with chocolate. Mole Poblano has an iconic history as it originated from a convent in Santa Rosa.  It’s exotic, sumptuous and an excellent feed for a main.  But it’s one amongst many – take your pick of traditional food, or more innovative recipes. You can knock back tequila, daiquiris, mojitos or sangria on the drinks menu, but there is also BYO wine. On occasion, there is beautiful live Mexican music performed for diners.
