Salsa dancing is one of the most popular forms of social dancing in the world, and it has been growing in popularity thanks to TV shows such as So You Think You Can Dance. For us, Latin people, it comes almost natural. For others, it requires practice and even some coaching.

In Brisbane, different venues offer different sets to practice and learn this dance. But it is known that every instructor will have a particular technique and will focus on their own version or type of salsa according to their background.

This weekend the appointment is with Cuban Salsa, which is danced in a circular motion and it has a more urban, 'street' flavor compared to some modern versions. The focus is not only on the precision of turning patterns, but also in communication and interaction with your partner.

The Spanish Centre in Acacia Ridge will be hosting not only 6 weeks of Cuban Salsa classes, but also Rueda. This is an extremely fun and enjoyable dance that is rare to find as it is danced by a large group of people together in a circle. One leader calls out moves to do, and everyone in the circle executes the move at the same time. It's a communal form of salsa that requires teamwork and promotes socialization.

So head to the Spanish Centre on Friday night, the Foundation class starts at 6pm and the Advanced is at 8pm. You won’t need a partner. They will find you one!
