CityHopper: An alternative and free way of moving around the city

Many international students that come to live in Brisbane complain about the high prices paid out in public transportation, since the government does not authorize the usage of concession cards for language learners.

However, despite Brisbane is well known as being one of the cities with most expensive public transport in the world, the government also offers some alternatives and even free ways of transportation, such as the CityHooper ferry, that certainly might be a good help for students that have been struggling to move around the city.

With eight stops, the CityHooper ferry passes through the most popular neighbours in the riverside every half hour. Moving around South Bank, Kangaroo Point, New Farm and the City, the free-ferry is becoming more and more popular between those who have to do this path daily.

In Brisbane since February, the Brazilian student Bruno Mantuano was at first surprised with the money spent in public transport: “Fortunately, my school is located in Kangaroo Point and I have been living in the neighbour since I have arrived. It was a shock to me when I first saw the prices of the public transportation fares, and hopefully I didn`t have to use it every day to go to school.”

After living here for more than three months, he is now taking advantage of this free service and rarely spend a dollar using it every week.

“When I heard about the CityHooper and the CityCicle, things had changed completely. I was avoiding to go out to the city before because I didn`t want to spend fifteen dollars every time just to get there. Now, I frequently go to the Valley and the City without many concerns”, he said.

The bad news, however, comes to the limited opening hours (until midnight), that doesn`t favours people that want to hang out late at night.
