Brisbane G20: An inconvenient truth
The G20 Brisbane summit brings together 20 major countries for discussions on finance, peace talks, and sustainability. It also brings together a chorus of groans from Brisbane residents.

World leaders such as Barack Obama, David Cameron, and the infamously evil Vladimir Putin will gather in Queensland’s capital to demonstrate to the world that they can be mature and civilized leaders (in my opinion however, maturity civility shown towards Vladimir Putin is not necessary). But from the 10th until the 17th of November transport is going to difficult. And on the days of the 14th, 15th, and 16th of November don’t even bother leaving your house if you live within a 10km radius of the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Major road closures include Russell Street, Grey Street, the Victoria Bridge, and Little Stanley Street. Why does it matter if Little Stanley street is closed you say? Well if you want to see a movie, between the 13th and 17th of November, and stroll on down for a quick dinner on Little Stanley Street, think again.
Along with residents of South Brisbane, West End (yes, even though you all think we’re hippies we do still drive cars through main roads), and Highgate Hill, workers commuting from other parts of Queensland will be extremely inconvenienced as well. For city-workers parking near is going to be almost impossible and those who catch the train can expect delays.
And how does the Queensland Government suggest we travel during the G20 summit? “... cycle, or walk.” But don’t fret, although it severely impacts the use of public transport and has invited the modern day Hitler, the G20 is supposed to generate $100 million in the long term which covers a third of what it is costing Australia to host it.
My advice for workers and residents; sleep under your desk from the 10th until the 17th of November or become a hermit.
