BOGO ROAD JAIL: The Markets in Dutton Park

It is very impressive how a space designed to be stage to convicts’ punishment in the past, can be revitalized to a point which nowadays attracts people from all over the city not to witness people's hanging, but to enjoy the Sundays mornings. This very interesting place is Boggo Road jail.

On Sundays the place is surrounded by the markets, where we can listen to the good music performed by great musicians, find fresh and cheap fruits and vegetables, new and second hand clothes, crafts, breads, and the Little Lady Peruvian Cuisine.

The Little Lady Peruvian Cuisine stall is decorated with live colours and the aroma that exhales from it, is an invitation to try the delicious food. The Boggo Road Jail has a very interesting history and many different guided historical tours are organized as a way to make the visitor’s experience more intense. 

The tours are called Short and Long Sentences, which last 45 and 90 minutes respectively as well as the Ghosts tours, which last 2 hours. There are also school tours where theatre performances are staged as a way to emphasize students' comprehension.

It is possible to book the tours online and by phone. The historical tours happen on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and are children friendly. There are tours guided by an ex-inmate, or by an ex-officer where stories of their times are shared, but are not suitable for children under 15 years old. These tours happen every first Sunday of each month. The Ghost tours happen on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and as Alain Lewis, one of the tour guides said: - Very unusual and scary things can happen at any moment.
