A culture full day at the Colombian Independence Day Festival

After being postponed from August 7th, the Colombian Independence Day Festival finally took place on Saturday, October 23rd in King George square. It was a day full of culture, flavor, talent and joy. The long-awaited festival may have not been as big as in previous years, but it managed to quench the homesickness of hundreds of Colombians in Brisbane.

The whole day was filled with amazing music and talents, all leaving their hearts on the stage and bringing Colombians some of their culture to them. Apart from the great talent seen on the day, there was also delicious Colombian food brought to the public by Latin Mana, La Parrilla and Yes Way Jose. They served mouth-watering traditional food like arepas, empanadas, tamales, meat a la parrilla with its classic Latin touch. 

The Colombian Dance Group also made an appearance and performed a couple of traditional Colombian dances that left the crowd speechless. Los Jamones took the stage later that afternoon, this cover band has managed to build quite the name for itself here in Australia and thus the audience was very excited to sing along to their all-time favourites. 

The day was filled with laughs and smiles from Colombians but also many Australians who were welcomed to learn, share and enjoy the Latin culture. This festival was an opportunity for the Colombian community in Australia and Australians to come together in a united front to show their support in these tough times of the pandemic.

Overall the event met the expectations and surpassed them for many people. David Leudo, 25-year-old Colombian expressed his enjoyment by saying his favorite part was watching Los Jamones, he said “it’s very hard to find a band that interprets Spanish rock in Australia,”. He claimed that everything was really great, but that the prices might have been a bit high and the lines very long.
