A Cuban joins Queensland Ballet

After the young Cuban Victor Estévez was invited, last November, as a guest in Queensland Ballet, where interpreted The Sleeping Beauty, the artistic director of the company, Li Cunxin, invited him as the principal dancer.

Estévez arrived to Brisbane city last January and now he is focused in his debut next April the first, when will be interpreting A Midsummer Night's Dream, from the choreographer Liam Scarlett.

Although Victor Estévez is just 22 years old, he has been performing for almost a decade in the five continents, but is Australia, specially Brisbane, where he is feeling comfortable and well received for the Queensland company.

Despite of the fact that Estévez has gotten a significant trajectory in an international level, he has great expectations and new goals in his carrier, he acknowledged about his disposition to keep growing as a professional and be recognized in the whole world as the best dancer ever.

GM: How were you invited to join the Queensland Ballet?

Estévez: In 2015 I was invited by director Li Cunxin to participate as a guest artist in the production of Sleeping Beauty, last November. It was a great experience, I had a chance to share with the dancers of the Queensland Company, they are excellent people and they form a large family. Part of that production was what motivated me to join the company this 2016.

GM: How are you managing these days prior to your debut as a principal dancer in Queensland Ballet?

Estévez: I first started rehearsing two days ago, I am working very hard with my colleague, Laura Hidalgo, from Argentina, who is also a principal dancer of the company, and I am very familiar with her, she helps me with English, we understand each other better. I'm working hard to give a good show.

GM: When thinking about Cuba, many of us are coming to mind: salsa music, among other Latin rhythms. Are you also familiar with that, do you like to dance it?

Estévez: As any Cuban, I know some other movements, in Cuba I used to dance when I was invited to parties where there were always popular dance music, I enjoyed myself there, but did not always have much time for that, but anyway, I know how to dance it.

GM: What is your impression about Brisbane City?

Estévez: It is very nice, good quality of life here, the weather is perfect, very tropical, I feel very good here.

GM: What are some of the goals you visualize in the future?

Estévez: I would someday play some classics that have not, like Romeo and Juliet or Manoon. I would like to continue growing professionally, I want to grow internationally and people come to recognize my work and.
